Following the divorce, Jeffrey lived first with his father and later with his grandmother. Lionel Dahmer consistently sought the best schooling and higher education for his son. When Jeffrey displayed early signs of severe distress, Lionel offered personal guidance and engaged professional counselors. He frequently advised Jeffrey on career paths and warned him when options were slipping away. Recognizing Jeffrey's dangerous potential early on, Lionel even wrote to a judge after a minor offense, urging that Jeffrey not be released without thorough psychological treatment.
